Latin Teachers' Corner

I create accessible, adaptable Latin resources to support interactive language learning

I focus on comprehensible input, reading fluency to ensure exam readiness, in a context where testing veers on the side of traditional grammar.

Let me show you why:

In my twenty years of experience teaching and learning languages, from Latin to Hittite to Mandarin, I have used a variety of methods, from traditional grammar-translation (I am looking at you, Wheelock!) to learning by walking around back streets and chatting to locals (ciao belli!).

My views on what works have changed over time, and they keep evolving as I read new research and engage in paedagogical discussion.

However, one thing is clear: you do not become successful in a language by just practising the exercises that the exam will be testing you with. A language that is not used, understood and loved cannot be truly learnt.

Do not get me wrong: I love philology! But Latin students are not miniature philologists, and I have learnt over time to reign in the grammar geek in me and use that knowledge to create resources that teach and engage.

I am always very happy to speak about my Latin teaching (and learning!) journey. You will find me delivering CPD at ARLT summer schools and refresher days, as well as participating in language learning conferences, such as the Jornadas by Cultura Clásica or the Scholae Cantabricae
